In a pivotal move that underscores the commitment to women’s sport, the St. George Junior Rugby League has announced a significant financial incentive to get more girls involved in community rugby league: a $100 subsidy off the registration fee for all female tackle players aged 13 and over.

This initiative is a powerful investment in the rapidly expanding female pathway in Rugby League, aiming to break down financial barriers and encourage more teenage girls and women to experience the fast-paced game of tackle footy. The subsidy is made possible through the generous support of key district partners, including the St. George Leagues Club and St. George DRLFC. This ensures girls aged 13 and above, the age where many transition from junior mixed competitions into the competitive world of girls-only teams.

“We’ve seen phenomenal growth in the women’s game. By making the game more affordable for females aged 13+, we are making sure more people are able to experience the thrill of rugby league.

The announcement comes on the back of unprecedented growth in female participation across all levels of the sport. The success of the NRL Women’s Premiership (NRLW) has created visible role models and a clear professional pathway, driving enthusiasm at the grassroots level. The league have also begun running Tag to Tackle courses to get girls confident in contact rugby league.

Dragons NRLW 2025 player of the year Madison Mulhall added, “Junior rugby league is such a great game for girls to build their skills, their confidence in the game, especially in a male-dominated field. It’s really awesome to see all of the girls get involved to build some fundamental life skills as well.”
